July was a month of 2 halves. The first half was spent getting ready for my first event - displaying at the Bedford River Festival with the Artists Network Bedfordshire. The second half of July was far more relaxing, as I enjoyed 2 weeks off work, with a week spent in the Scilly Isles on a family holiday.
Firstly, my first photographic editiorial for The Bedford Clanger was published. The Clanger is a monthly Arts and Culture magazine for Bedford. As well as being online, it is also in print from a number of shops and outlets throughout Bedford. As a relative newcomer to the area, my monthly feature is called Rediscovering Bedford, and will be my view of Bedford. It will also cover some technical details around how the photo was done etc… to hopefully inspire others to get out and be creative with their cameras. That’s the plan, anyway...
Next up, was The Bedford River Festival aka, sweating it out in a marquee on the hottest weekend of the year so far festival.
Here’s what the display looked like.
I’d never done an event where my work was on display or for sale, and I was surprised by how much of an emotional roller coaster it is. So many people held prints in their hands for a few moments longer than normal, commenting about how lovely it was, only for it to be returned to box of prints. Your hopes are raised and dashed in the blink of an eye. There was also the odd comment about photoshop, or how easy it is to do if you have the right camera, so you have to have a thick skin too. Thankfully, I did have some sales, including a framed picture of the infamous Swan. It’s a lovely feeling to think that people appreciate your work so much, that they wish to have it displayed in their homes. Each sale, wiped any of the previous snarky comments from my mind.
Now I've had a chance to review the experience subjectively, I am pleased with how it went, and there were many positives to take from the weekend. I have a few more events lined up between now and the end of the year, and I am looking forward to them. It’s not my intention to do many, but to make sure I select a key few local events that help promote me and my work within the Bedfordshire and bordering counties.
I’ve been looking forward to my trip to the Scilly Isles ever since we booked it last year. Living in Central Beds. the opportunities for coastal photography are few and far between, so I was really looking forward to the challenge of photographing something different. Anyway, needless to say I fell in love with the place, and came away with well over 1000 pics in total! There will be a blog about the trip, but in the meantime, here are a couple of my favourite pictures so far.
To round off a wonderful trip, the last day of the holiday was also my 37th (gulp) birthday, and the real icing on the cake was that one of my wave images won a weekly Twitter comp, #FSPrintmonday. Run by Fotospeed, the winning images will be on display at the Photography Show in Birmingham in 2017. I can't wait to see it printed and on display.
